Description:
This module is an overview of the need to
improve geriatric palliative care and the role of the nurse as
a member of an interdisciplinary team in providing care. Basic
principles of palliative care are presented within a quality
of life framework.
Objectives:
- Describe the role of the nurse and other
members of the health care team in providing quality
palliative care for elder patients and residents in nursing
homes (NH), long term care (LTC) facilities and other
geriatric care settings.
- Recognize changes in population
demographics, health care economics, and service delivery
that necessitate improved professional preparation for
palliative care.
- Describe the philosophy and principles of
hospice and palliative care that can be integrated across
geriatric settings to affect quality care at the end of
life, including the role of the nursing assistant in this
care.
